Six accused in Deokaran murder want their case to go to high court

The alleged killers of Babita Deokaran briefly appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Thursday before Magistrate Simon Sibanyoni, who had denied them bail on December 20, 2021.

Phakamani Hadebe, Zitha Radebe, Phinda Ndlovu, Sanele Mbhele, Siphiwe Mazibuko and Siphakanyiswa Dladla have been charged with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The state indicated they are in the process of finalising the investigation and an indictment would be available at their next appearance. Shafique Sarlie, acting for the accused, said, “At this stage, I’ve advised my clients that we will not appeal the decision to refuse their bail.”

Sarlie said it was important the case goes to the high court as that is the appropriate platform for a ruling on the admissibility of Hadebe’s confession.
