Tribhangi Dance Theatre’s Latest Production, “Mapping Our Journey,”

23 March @ 7:30 pm - 26 March @ 3:00 pm

$120

Johannesburg, South Africa – Tribhangi Dance Theatre, under the guidance of Artistic Director Jayesperi Moopen, is pleased to announce their latest production, “Mapping Our Journey.” This ground-breaking show combines the classical Indian dance form with contemporary dance gestures, resulting in a unique and challenging work that highlights the company’s ability to experiment with different genres.
“At Tribhangi Dance Theatre, we pride ourselves on producing compelling storytelling through the diversity of dance and art, enabling humanity to unite,” says founder and architect Jayesperi Moopen. “Mapping Our Journey” focuses on the contributions of the Indian diasporic community since the 1860s, and our quest for a shared non-racial national belonging and identity fused in our South African culture towards a progressive transformation.”
The production is a testament to the company’s greatest strength – their ability to experiment with different genres and present unique and challenging work. “Elements,” an uncompromising, precise work which deliciously melds classical Indian dance values with contemporary dance gesture, is an example of their ability to push boundaries and produce work that remains significant in an ever-changing environment.
“Pivotal events like the Women’s March, acknowledging our stalwarts like Biko, Saths Cooper, Strini Moodley, and many other men and women who paved the way for us, reinforce Desmond Tutu’s dream of Ubuntu, and Kathrada and Mandela’s contribution to a free South Africa to be enjoyed by all,” adds Moopen. “There is a need to give expression to define ourselves more greatly in terms of our African identity. An identity that is still in the making as we were given a narrative and need to work through it to create one of our own.”

“Mapping Our Journey” is a production that underpins a shared history of suffering and resistance, with the bonds of our hearts, mind, and soul. Tribhangi Dance Theatre’s history was formed and continues to be shaped by critical important shifts and movements that define our nation.

“Mapping Our Journey” will be performed at the Lesedi Theatre, Joburg Theatre Complex on Thursday, 23rd March 2023 at 7:30 pm, Friday, 24th March 2023 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, 25th March 2023 at 3:00 pm, and Sunday, 26th March 2023 at 3:00 pm.
