City of Joburg Speaker Vasco da Gama said the official funeral was equivalent to a military funeral at the level of local government.
“A civic funeral is basically where it’s a military funeral at the national level. At a local level, it would be Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers, and you know we would have one of the fire trucks carry the body and obviously there will be a specific way of how the day is conducted.” He said:
On Monday, Moerane succumbed to the injuries he sustained when he was involved in a car accident two weeks ago. It was reported that he was on his way from Alexandra to his home in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg.
He was appointed as mayor after the passing of Jolidee Matongo, who died in a car accident during the local government election campaign last year.
Moerane was in the running to become the ANC Johannesburg chairperson. The regional conference has been postponed for a second time.
